Introduction to Integrative Medicine (12 Hours)

Course Description: This course introduces the principals of integrative medicine and how the core principal of inflammation is related to chronic disease.  It includes the (adult) physical examination from an integrative medicine perspective, and the preparation of a case presentation.  

Objectives:  Students will be able to explain the philosophy and treatment approach of integrative medicine, and the physiology and pathophysiology of the inflammatory process and natural medicine anti-inflammatory measures and be able to conduct an integrative physical examination.

Note: This course is also offered in the 300 Hour Certified Integrative Health Care Provider program as Module One. There is a video and supporting material in this course that provides information regarding case presentation required for Part One of the CIHP final examination.  A case presentation is not a requirement for completing this course when taken as an individual component.  However, the examination at the end of the course (at the conclusion of CIHP108) is required to ensure proof of proficiency and to receive a transcript of completion.

CIHP101 Introduction to Integrative Medicine (1.5 Hrs)

Module Description: This module discusses the basic principles of Integrative and how functional medicine is its foundation.  It describes how integrative medicine is a style of practice in which the practitioner and patient choose the appropriate therapy or medicine for the treatment of a particular condition. It explores how integrative medicine is healing oriented and emphasizes the centrality of the doctor-patient relationship and how its focus is to promote health by utilizing the least invasive, least toxic, and least costly methods. It addresses how the primary focus of  integrative medicine encourages disease prevention as opposed to waiting to treat disease; and how the terms complementary, alternative, and functional medicine are not synonymous with integrative medicine.

CIHP102 Introduction to Natural Therpeutics (1.5 hrs)

Module Description: This module provides an introduction to natural therapeutics by taking a look at the philosophy of Chiropractic, Osteopathy, and Naprapathy and exploring the classifications of common natural therapeutics.  The learner will understand how the selection of natural therapeutics and/or conventional therapy should be based on the specific needs of the individual, as well as the safety and effectiveness of the prescribed therapy.  It provides a list of the basic principles of holistic health care and how integrating these tenets into practice will ensure a mutually beneficial doctor-patient relationship in regard to optimal treatment outcomes.

CIHP103 Nutritional Medicine in Clinical Practice (1.5 hrs)

Module Description: This module discusses nutritional medicine in clincial practice.  It covers topics such as: Wellness and Optimal Nutritional Status, The Transtheoretical Model (Stages of Change)Clinical Perspective on Stages of Change, Nutriture, Nutritional Medicine and covers specific disorders, including: GERD, Chronic Pancreatitis, Acne, and Nutritional Hormesis. as well as addressing the approach on Medical Nutritional Therapy, Diet History, Anthropometry, Adipose Tissue, Body Water and Hydration StatusElectrolytes, and The Importance of Hand Grip Strength as a Marker of Nutritional Status.

CIHP104 Integrative Medicine Patient History (1.5 hrs)

Module Description: This module discusses the importance of the patient health history from an integrative perspective.  It give an in depth look at the integrative medicine patient history, including the standard and integrative medicine components as well as the approach to the interviewing process and recognizing patient readiness for change.  It explores the signs and symptoms of nutritional deficiencies, the key attributes of a symptom, and a review of systems.

CIHP105 Integrative Medicine Adult Physical Exam (1.5 hrs)

Module Description: This module is broken down into  (4) parts.  It approaches the (Adult) physical examination from an integrative medicine perspective.  It begins with the importance of the exam room layout, equipment, and standard and universal precautions and addresses how to determine the sensitivity and specificity of a test.  It moves on to discuss the approach to the patient, preparation and overview of the examination and includes the general survey in detail.   Also includes a Self-Study Workshop at the conclusion of Part D of the initial lesson group.

CIHP106 Clinical Forms and Recordkeeping (1.5 hrs)

Module Description: This module explains how through valid and consistent documentation integrative medicine clinicians can obtain the outcomes information needed to provide quality patient care and quality postdoctoral educational programs. Using standardized documentation forms provides advantages for educational purposes within the profession, for researchers, clinicians, and patients. The following integrative medicine forms are provided in this lesson: Integrative Medicine History/Examination Form, Integrative Medicine Health Summary Form, and Integrative Medicine SOAP Note Form.

CIHP107 Case Presentation Preparation (1.5 hrs)

Module Description: This module teaches the importance of a thorough integrative case presentation and the guidelines for collecting such a history. It provides standardized integrative medicine physical exam and health history forms as well as a completed case history presentation.

CIHP108 Physiology and Pathophysiology of Inflammation (1.5 hrs)

Module Description: This module discusses the inflammatory process to include its components, mediators, the markers it affects in the serum, resoleomics, its biochemistry, and the role fatty acids play from beginning to end.  It also covers the signs and symptoms associated with fatty acid abnormalities along with functional and integrative interventions to modulate the inflammatory process.
